(San Diego, CA) - The USD men's golf team, led by 5th-year head coach Tim Mickelson, found out today that they are heading to Seattle, Washington as a participant in the 2008 NCAA Western Regional Golf Championships (May 15-17). USD, which won the West Coast Conference title and the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Championships, is making its second trip in three years (first since 2006). With 27 teams and 6 individuals competing at Gold Mountain Golf Club (par 72; 7104 yards) in Bremerton, Washington, USD enters as the No. 24 seed. The other two regional sites are Chattanooga, Tenn. (Council Fire Golf Club) and Columbus, Ohio (Scarlet Golf Course).
"We are excited to be heading to Gold Mountain in Washington for the West Regional," said head coach Tim Mickelson. "We feel this course suits our guys well and I fully expect them to perform well next week. All three regionals are very well balanced this year so it didn't really matter which one we were sent to. However, the course plays long with some thick rough so ball striking will be a key and we are definitely a good ball striking team. While the competition is tough, I feel we have a legitimate shot of advancing through the West Regional next week. It will be exciting to see if the guys can pull it off."
The University of Washington is the host school for the event. The participating schools in order of seeding include No. 1 USC, (2) UCLA, (3) Florida State, (4) Stanford, (5) Clemson, (6) UNLV, (7) North Carolina, (8) Texas Tech, (9) Central Florida, (10) Arizona State, (11) San Diego State, (12) Texas, (13) LSU, (14) Oregon State, (15) Pepperdine, (16) Oregon, (17) Cal, (18) Saint Mary's College, (19) Kentucky, (20) Wisconsin, (21) Washington, (22) Oklahoma, (23) Kansas State, (24) SAN DIEGO, (25) Denver, (26) Navy, (27) Columbia.
