Pepperdine Takes Series Opener, 5-2

MALIBU, Calif. - The seventh-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (35-13, 13-3 WCC) dropped the series opener to No. 13 Pepperdine University (28-13, 9-3 WCC), 5-2, Friday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The Waves got on the scoreboards first as in the bottom of the second inning, Pepperdine pushed across two runs on a Bryce Mendonca bases-loaded two-run single to give the Waves a 2-0 lead.

Pepperdine then doubled their lead in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run homer by Ryan Heroy to move the score to 4-0.

San Diego finally broke up the no-hitter in the top of the fourth inning as they scored one run on two hits. Victor Sanchez got things started with a walk and he moved to second on a Kevin Hansen walk. Jose Valerio then loaded the bases with a single through the right side and Nick McCoy drove inn Sanchez with a RBI single to left field to cut the deficit to three at 4-1.

The Toreros continued to chip away at the lead as they took back another run on two hits in the top of the fifth inning. James Meador got things started with a stand-up double and he moved to third when Gelbrich grounded into a double play. Victor Sanchez then walked and stole second and Meador came across on a wild pitch to move the score to 4-2 in favor of the Waves.

Pepperdine then extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Heroy RBI single to put the game at its final of 5-2.

 

 

Brian Matusz (9-2) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed five runs on 10 hits, while striking out nine in six innings of work. Nathan Newman (6-2) was credited with the win for the Waves as he allowed two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. WCC game against Pepperdine. This game is scheduled to air live on CBS College Sports TV.
